THE GRADUATE SCHOOL – QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST

Queen’s University Belfast has a long history of appreciating and honouring its architecture, as its campus is known as one of the most iconic landmarks and visiting sites of Belfast. UsFolk was commissioned by the University’s Graduate School department, and curator of the Naughton Gallery at Queen’s Ben Crothers, to develop a suite of visuals as part of an exhibition celebrating the building’s 150 year anniversary. Formly known as the Lynn Library and built by renowned Irish architect William Henry Lynn, the Graduate School is currently a hub for developing students’ careers during and after their time at the university.

The visuals developed by UsFolk included promotional design materials and a standing infographic that displayed the history of the building and included commissioned artwork by UsFolk illustrator Jamie Beard. A key element of the resulting body of work was the representation of the diverse student body, and implementation of the University’s brand colours to seamlessly tie the unique artwork to the institution. The use of illustration alongside these informative graphics resulted in a new contemporary view to the building’s traditional history, thus reflecting the Graduate School’s nature of collaboration with the old and the new.

“The Naughton Gallery has worked in collaboration with UsFolk over the past few years on several projects, and they have become our go-to organisation for our design and illustration needs.  From partnership projects such as the hugely successful SCREEN/PRINT series to postcard and flyer designs, UsFolk demonstrates professionalism, creativity, and innovation in all that they do. We also work with them to select illustrators for a whole range of projects – varying from commissions for gallery exhibitions to large scale murals for the University’s estate –  and the team is always an absolute pleasure to work with.  Their rich and varied roster of illustrators ensures that we achieve the best fit for each specific project, keeping our collaborations fresh and original.”
